The Blue Card Command Certification Program teaches Incident Commanders and other fire officers how to standardize incident operations across their department, providing:
- Safer, more effective hazard zone procedures
- System-wide accountability among all personnel and response agencies
- A reduction in the number of firefighter injuries and deaths
- Simulation-based training to complement on-the-job learning
The Blue Card program is NIMS-compliant and designed to manage NIMS Type 4 and 5 incidents—which represent more than 99 percent of a department’s incident activity. Offered through Medteq Solutions, it features 50 hours of online training, including text, simulations, video coaching, quizzes and more covering such topics as:
- Assume, Confirm & Position Command
- Situation Evaluation
- Communications
- Deployment Management
- Organization
- Strategy & Incident Action Planning
- Review, Evaluation & Revision
- Continue, Transfer & Terminate Command
To receive the full certification, which is valid for three years, students must pass a hands-on evaluation session, which tests their ability to perform the responsibilities of an initial On-Scene Officer, Incident Commander, Incident Management Team (IMT) Member and Sector/Division/Group Supervisor/Safety Officer.
The Blue Card online program is $295 per student, with classroom and testing sessions being held at the Loveland Symmes Fire Department Command Training Center for an additional cost. The classroom and testing session consists of 3 8 hour days of review of hazard zone management, identifying and addressing critical factors and 15-20 hazard zone management simulations per day. The cost for the Blue Card classroom and testing session is $250.00 per student. Classroom and testing sessions will be offered beginning early 2010. A mobile testing facility is also available.
