Best Practices and Risk Management Principles at Structure Fires to Prevent Death and Injury

The Loveland Symmes Fire Department would like to invite the community to our annual fire department open houses.  The first one will be on 10/4 from 6:30pm -8pm at station 63 located at 100 E. Loveland Ave in the City of Loveland.  The second will be on 10/7 from 6:30pm -8pm at station 61 located at 8871 Weekly Ln.  in Symmes Township.  We welcome you all to come out and go through the station, our apparatus, and talk with the firemen.  Refreshments will be on hand so come on out and see us. 

 
Loveland-Symmes crews responded this morning to a rescue job at Webster packaging on East Kemper Road in the City of Loveland. First alarm was District One, Engine 60 , Medic 62 and Rescue 61. Upgraded Alarm received two additional chiefs Chief 6001 and Chief 6004. Upon arrival District Chief Rose took command and assigned a triage crew consisting of 2 medics. Shortly thereafter they confirmed an entrapment of a male patient in a printing press. Engine 60 and Chief 6001 arrived on scene. Chief Rose passed command to Chief Huber and took operations. Deputy Chief Blum and Rescue 61 under command of Lt. Money arrived and Chief Blum was assigned rescue group.
 
After assessment of the patient ,Physicians from University of Cincinnati were summoned to the scene via Air Rescue 91. Deputy Chief Goldfeder and Quint 63 were assigned to medical flight and set up a landing zone at the New Hope Baptist Church .
 
The Rescue company drove wedges and inserted air bags after they performed a lock out tag procedures to the printing drum. This allowed enough room to extricate the patient. The patient was packaged and transported to the landing zone by medic 62 where he was flown to University of Cincinnati Medical Center in Avondale. Crews debriefed and returned to quarters. Fire Chiefs from the Northeast Fire Collaborative attended the International Association of Fire Chiefs Conference in Chicago last week.
Pictured are Deputy Chiefs, Gregory , Rose, Blum and Chief of Department Otto Huber. Chicago Fire Commissioner  Robert Hoff is pictured with Chief Huber and Gregory aboard Chicago’s “ The Victor L Schlaeger” fire boat. This vessel was commissioned in the late 1940’s and still serves the City well. It is a floating fire station as a company of five live aboard this ship year around.
Not pictured but attended the conference were Department Chiefs Ralph Hammonds and Rick Brown along with Deputy Chief Billy Goldfeder. 
The Northeast Fire Collaborative was one of seven finalist recognized in the opening session for the Ronnie Coleman Fire Service Excellence Award for innovation in the fire service. The Collaborative was awarded a plaque and a check for 500 hundred dollars.

The LSFD was dispatched at approximately 02:00 on August 29, 2010 to motor vehicle accident, vehicle was reported to have hit a pole and brought down wires. 

Upon arrival the crews found a single car w/moderate to severe front end damage, that had hit and completely severed the pole, breaking the guide wire and some cable TV lines (other wires were hanging low into the street).  Crews assessed the occupants of the vehicle and thankfully all had been wearing their seatbelts, as of the 5 people in the vehicle, only one was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

D1 & E62 was dispatched today for a boat into car wash causing structural damage. The boat's tower knocked out beams at the front entrance of the car wash bay, no one was injured in this incident. 1-800 Board Up was called in to clean debris off of boat. Units were onscene for over an hour then were released. When towing equipment please be aware of the heights in which you operate in, for your safety and others.

Today's session was requested by the Loveland Schools Transportation Office.  Each year the drivers go through training on bus emergencies and this year the LSFD was asked to help out.  As a bonus, we were able to show the drivers what we would have to do in a real emergency, how loud it will be and what to expect during a bus roll over.

D1, E60, Q63, T61, E13, M73, E88, E93, R52, S62, M27, were dispatched to 150 E. Broadway for a structure fire. District Chief Gregory was the Incident Commander for this operation. Upon Q63 arrival light smoke was coming from the building, Q63 stretched  handlines to the front door to prepare for advancement into structure for search, rescue, & fire attack. E60 established a water supply for the incident. Interior Crews found low visibility conditions, as they reached the origin of the fire, they found a smoldering oven & fire was out. E60, T61, E88 & E93 were assigned to 1st, 2nd & 3rd floor primary search & fire extension, & ventilation. Once the fire crews declared a loss stop, crews were released & went available. Thank You to all of the mutual aid crews that assisted with this incident.
